Many foodie places are closed as the staff deserved their yearly break and hence it is a great challenge to find food during this period...
However, we went to VivoCity and realised that many food outlets are still opened. Since this is a family lunch with my parents involved, we would naturally go for Chinese Cuisine. This time round, we have decided to lunch at Soup Restaurant (三盅两件) as it is one of the few Chinese Restaurants that are opened on the first day of the Lunar New Year.
The menu during the festive season is very limited during this season and we can only order their Chinese New Year Set Menu. We ordered their Prosperity Set for 4 pax (there were 5 of us) as their food servings are very generous based on our previous experiences in this restaurant. The set costs approximately SGD178++ and it was considered quite reasonable from the spread :)
Happy Lunar New Year!!! |
Le' Ambience
Before we entered the restaurant, there was a booth stationed outside with all the food ingredients for their Yu Sheng (鱼生).
In case you are clueless on what is Yü Shēng, I shall just give you a brief insight on what is this special dish all about. Yü Shēng (鱼生) simply means raw fish in Chinese. It is a Teochew-style raw fish salad which consists of strips of raw fish mixed with shredded vegetables (like carrots) and a variety of sweet and sour sauces and seasoned with peanut powder and crispy crackers. Yü Shēng is a homophone for Yú Shēng (余升) which means increasing abundance and hence is considered as something auspicious during the Lunar New Year.
The décor of the restaurant mimics the ancient setting of a tavern - with antique wooden tables and stools. Pretty cool when you are there :) Also, there is an outdoor dining area where you can enjoy the scenery (hmmm, not very breathtaking because this is located in a shopping mall, not on top of some mountain).. LOL.
The Outdoor Area |
Oh by the way, as there was 5 of us, we requested to be seated around a round table but was told that we need to have at least 10 people present in order to qualify for the round table. So we ended up sitting oddly on the stools around the rectangular table provided :(
Le' Food
Prosperity Tuna Yusheng (富贵一生)
Celebration Platter with Tuna Fish 金枪鱼生与传统材料
This dish was served by one of a junior staff. It is a tradition that the waiter should assist to sprinkle the yusheng ingredients / sauces in whilst uttering some words of blessings. I think this waiter was a little too shy to say his auspicious words out since my camera was filming the entire process.. You may view the video here:
My mom was a little concerned that the waiter did not wear gloves whilst he was squeezing the lime juice onto the Yusheng.. Hmmm.. But thank God we have not died of food poisoning yet *fingers crossed*

This dish tasted pretty nice but I would prefer to have more raw fish to be served as I am a Sashimi lover ♥♥
Samsui Chicken with 4 Treasures (五福临门)
三水姜茸鸡,海蜇,金钱肉,海螺,金银枣
The Samsui Chicken is their signature dish. We love to savour their smooth and tender white chicken served with their special ginger sauce and wrapped with the sheets of cabbage provided. Absolutely refreshing and yummy.
Also the Bakkwa (BBQ Pork Sheets) are being cut into small round sheets (like coins) which makes it easier for consumption.
Huat Ah! 财源滚滚! |
Fortune Fish Glitters in Gold (年年有余)
酱蒸八叔公鱼
According to fish lovers like my parents and Sweetie Muffin, they were full of praises for this dish. They said that the fish tasted really tender and smooth...
Crustacean Fried Rice with XO Sauce (招财进宝 XO酱海鲜炒饭)
The Fried Rice was a little tad saltish to our liking because we were too used to the healthy bland tasting home-cooked food :)
Butterfly Prawns with Salted Egg Concasse (遍地黄金)
奶油咸蛋黄金虾
I was too full after eating the previous few dishes and hence decided to skip this dish as the taste might be too heavy for me since salted eggs are used.
Overall
We enjoyed our dining experience there and the Soup Restaurant is one of the many Chinese Restaurants that are frequented by my Parents besides Dian Xiao'Er and Din Tai Fung.
