Soon Heng Rojak

Sweetie Muffin brought Da Piggy and Da Rabbit to eat yummy Rojak after an afternoon's hardwork doing tracting at the Toa Payoh neighbourhood.

By the way, our church will be having an Evangelistic Service on 10 - 13 December 2013 evenings whereby everybody is welcomed to attend to get a better insight about our faith and Christianity. Event details will be available here: http://www.truejesuschurch.sg/jesus/invitation-who-is-jesus/

Evangelistic Service Invitation

This highly raved Soon Heng Rojak was located at Gourmet Paradise Food Court located in the Toa Payoh HDB Hub.

We spotted an ultra long queue when we arrived at the food court. In order to better experience this, I volunteered to queue for the rojak whilst the guys went to find seats and order their main courses.

What is Rojak?

For the benefit of the foreigners, I shall explain what is this local delicacy 'Rojak' all about.

The term 'Rojak' stems from the Malay word meaning a 'Mixture'. In the Western perspective, perhaps the term 'Salad' would be more appropriate as this dish consists of a mixture of fruits and vegetables.

The ingredients and dressing used in the 'Rojak' differs from country to country due to the difference in traditional culture. In Singapore, we have the Mamak Rojak and Indian Rojak served by the Malays in Indians respectively.

The Malay Mamak Rojak has been adored by myself as the ingredients consists of fried dough fritters, cuttlefish, bean curds, cucumber, boiled potatoes, prawn fritters and bean sprouts mixed with a concentrated sweet and spicy peanut sauce.

The Indian Rojak on the other hand consists of an assortment of eggs, bean curd, fried battered prawns and potatoes served with a red-coloured sweet and spicy chilli sauce.

After having known more about this delicacy, we shall move on to the review accordingly.

Le' Stall

The Soon Heng Rojak Stall was a humble set-up in the Gourmet Paradise Food Court located in the basement of the Toa Payoh HDB Hub. We took an escalator down from the HDB Hub to the food court and Soon Heng Rojak Stall was located near the foot of the escalator.

The Long Queue and Rojak Crowd
There is an amazing characteristic which Singaporeans possess. They enjoy to join queues and crowds at times without even knowing the purpose of the queue. In their mentality, a stall with long queue means that the food served by the stall must taste good and hence nothing will go wrong as long as there is a crowd tagging on. Either we enjoy the good food together or complain together after eating something lousy. LOL.

From afar, I could hear the staff snipping the crispy fried dough fritters into smaller pieces with a scissors. Also, when I was queuing, their supplier arrived and unloaded a cart filled with packets of peanut powder and sugar. You may catch a glimpse from my short video clip below (do follow me on Instagram if you are keen!):

We will see awards and newspaper clips about the stall being pinned prominently on the wall of the stall.

Oh yes, by the way a plate of Rojak costs a minimum of SGD2.50. You might want to order bigger portions at SGD3, SGD4 or SGD5 depending on your group size and appetite. So it is actually very affordable!! *WOW*

Close-Up

We ordered a SGD4.00 portion of the Rojak as we have 3 people sharing the plate of Rojak altogether. The Rojak was served with a generous serving of the dark peanut sauce with a tint of chilli. The fried dough fritters were harder and crispier than the ones we would normally get from the markets which is good as fried dough fritters tend to go soggy after absorbing the Rojak gravy. This dish was perfect as the fried dough fritters remained really crispy for a long time. Also, the cucumbers and other ingredients complemented the overall taste although I adored the fried dough fritters most ;)

Overall

We enjoyed our dining experience at the food court as the food served were of great value of money. Da Piggy gobbled down most of the fried dough fritters from the Rojak as they were so crispy and tasty leaving little for the rest of us to savor.. Meh~

Posing with my Foodie~
Further to the Rojak, I also ordered Fried Carrot Cake from another stall in the Food Court which was pretty delicious too ;)
