Highlights of Taipei: Raohe St. Night Market (饒河街觀光夜市)

Raohe St. Night Market (饒河街觀光夜市)

The Raohe Street Night Market is one of the oldest night markets in Taipei.

It is located near the Songshan Station and the Ciyou Temple is located at the ending of the market towards the east.

Night Market hopping has been one of the must-do activity when we were in Taipei as different night markets offer different specialty snacks.

The night market was less crowded due to the light drizzles.

Fried Sweet Potato Fries @ Cia Cia Fu

甘梅地瓜 @ Cia Cia Fu

Our first stop was under the orange signboard of Cia Cia Fu which specialises in Fried Sweet Potatoes. The speciality of Taiwanese snacks are the flavoured seasoning powders you can choose to add to your snacks to enhance the taste. Of course, I do suspect that they do contain MSG and is not too healthy for prolonged consumption. But.. who cares when you are here to enjoy the food right?

甘梅地瓜

We ordered the Fried Sweet Potato Fries with sour plum powder (甘梅地瓜 gān méi dì guā) and the first taste of it was soooo AMAZING!! The sweet potato fries were fried to light golden brown and they emit their very own unique sweetness. The sour plum powder made the entire snack so delectable and appetising.. We were actually hooked onto this snack till we were tempted to buy a second packet but gave up as there were many other snacks which we have yet to try (Ewww blame it on our small stomachs). This is heavenly and highly recommended for you guys to try when you are in this night market.

Snowy Ice and Muah Chee for desserts

Raohe St. Night Market (饒河街觀光夜市)

The best part in Taipei is to share a bowl of shaved ice in the midst of the cool and rainy climate ~ We stopped at this shop to try their fruity snowy ice as well as their Muah Chee. The Muah Chee was served in big clumps and dissecting it proves to be a challenge for Sweetie Muffin as he broke his toothpick whilst trying to do so.. Perhaps the staff can assist to cut it into smaller pieces using a pair of scissors or something.. But well, the taste of the food there was awesome too ^^

Fruitty Snowy Ice consisting of Strawberries, Mangoes, Bananas and a Pudding with Chocolate Fudge and Rainbow Rice as topping!
*Warning: The frozen mangoes tend to be icy cold and might cause your sensitive teeth to ache a lot!

Grilled Mushrooms

Uncle preparing the Grilled Mushrooms..

With our bellies half-filled with food, we chanced upon this grilled mushroom stall and ordered some to try as well. The mushrooms tasted so fresh and juicy and it was flavoured with some seasoning powder too ~

The Mushrooms are HUGE!

Frying Milk

Raohe St. Night Market (饒河街觀光夜市)

Being a dairy products lover, I bought this novel snack to try - Fried Milk Cubes aka Frying Milk (炸鲜奶 zhà xiān nâi). It tasted like condensed milk with a crispy skin.. Quite satisfying ~

"Chiong" Custard Buns @ 芋包芋 (yù bāo yù)

Raohe St. Night Market (饒河街觀光夜市)

Then, as lovers of the Hong Kong Custard Buns, we saw this purplish stall selling snack which is very similar to the Custard Buns served in dim sum restaurants. The taste is indeed very similar to the Custard Buns we have tasted in Hong Kong cafés just that the outer skin is crispier than usual and we pretty liked it :)
