Highlights of Hualien (花蓮): Zhiqiang Night Market (自强夜市)

Night Market Hopping @ Hualien

There are 2 Night Markets in Hualien - the Zhiqiang Night Market (自强夜市) and the Nanbin Night Market (南濱夜市).

Our Cabbie Aunty - Ms. Gu recommended us to visit the Zhiqiang Night Market instead as there seem to be more attractions there.

Hence after our Taroko Visit, we spent our evening exploring the Zhiqiang Night Market.

 Syrup Fruit Stick (牛B葫芦王)

I was obsessed with Candied Haws during my Night Market Hopping and was amazed that this stall sells my Candied Haws in the fruity version!

I bought 2 sticks but regretted because they tasted too sweet to my liking. I prefer the one from Shilin Night Market instead.

Tasted so-so.

蒋家棺財板 (Jiâng Jiā Guān Cái Bân) aka Coffin Toast

Thick toasts which comes in different assorted flavours - a specialty food of the Hualien Night Market! This is called a "Coffin" toast because the bread is being fashioned like the structure of a coffin - with the middle portion dug up at the "coffin lid" so as to stuff the fillings in the middle.

As we did not want to mess up the place, we did not take much pictures of the "naked" Coffin Toast. However if you are interested on how does it exactly look like, you may just google "Coffin Toast" accordingly and many photos will pop up :)

The taste is really great and it comes with complimentary free drinks - tea / milk tea if you dine within their premise! What a great deal!

Ling Ji Corn BBQ (林記燒番麥)

As typical Singaporeans, we are attracted by the long queues from this stall and hence decided to give their BBQ Corns a try.

They allow you to choose your corn and charge you based on the weight of the corn.

The glazed the corn in a sweet tasting black sauce before barbecuing it and I personally prefer the Singaporean / Malaysian version of barbecuing sweet corn - coating them with a layer of butter instead. The sweet sauce version masked the natural sweetness of the corns... In my opinion the butter version did enhance the corn-y taste as the fragrance from the butter and the corn's natural sweetness do complement each other very well. And I personally prefer my corns to be juicy. Yums!

Saw this very nice bar at the entrance of the Night Market...
