Highlights of Taipei: Shilin Night Market (士林夜市)

Visiting Night Markets is a must when you are in Taiwan.

There are many night markets in Taiwan and Shilin is the most famous and one of the biggest night market there. Accessibility to the Shilin Night Market is not a problem given its proximity to the Jiantan Metro Station.

The main highlights of the Shilin Night Market is of course the famous XXL Fried Chicken (士林豪大大鸡排 Shì Lín Háo Dà Dà Jī Pái) from Hot Star.

Le' Infamous XXL Fried Chicken (士林豪大大鸡排 Shì Lín Háo Dà Dà Jī Pái) from Hot Star

Indeed the chicken tasted crispy and really tender and succulent on the inside.. The oil used for deep frying is fresh and it tasted a lot better than Singapore's!

Savouring my Large Fried Chicken.. Of course we have to share this as the portion was indeed super LARGE!

Then, the candied haws (冰糖葫芦 Bīng Táng Hù Lú) caught my attention... I bought a stick which consists of a combination of cherry tomatoes and dried prunes. That really made my day as it didn't taste too sweet as the sourness from the cherry tomatoes kind of neutralised the candy coating's sweetness. Yummy!!!

And also, one of the stall with the longest queue besides Hot Star is the "Big Intestine wrap Small Intestine" (大肠包小肠 Dà Cháng Bāo Xiâo Cháng). This snack is made of Taiwanese Sausages sandwiched in Sticky Glutinous Rice.. I wonder why it was so appealing because it tasted pretty normal to me as well..

Next, we tried the fried fish balls which has received much media publicity (it was located opposite to the "Big Intestine Wrap Small Intestine" small and one of us bought these fish balls whilst Sweetie Muffin was queuing for them).

The fish balls do come in different toppings but they tasted pretty mediocre somehow :(

Lastly we popped into a random eatery and tried the Smelly Tofu (臭豆腐 Chòu Dòu Fu) and Chilled Noodles (好朋友凉面 Hâo Péng Yôu Liáng Miàn). The Smelly (Fermented) Tofu smelt really stinky as we pass by the stalls selling them but it actually tasted insipid like normal tofus just that they stink during the process of deep-frying. The Chilled Noodles tasted great too :)

Tracy also bought some mixed fruits to share but they are rather costly if you get it from this Night Market. However, we do miss eating healthy fruits and vegetables during our stay in Taipei as most foods are deep-fried and unhealthy.
